Long rice queues reported in Nueva Ecija
Author: Cecille
MANILA, Philippines - Long rice queues formed in Nueva Ecija province early Saturday after the National Food Authority (NFA) in Central Luzon ordered its warehouses in the region to remain open on Saturdays.
Radio dzRH reported that in Nueva Ecija, marketgoers quickly but patiently lined up at the Cabanatuan City public market for the commodity, a Filipino staple.
But rice dealers said they were forced to sell rice at a maximum of three kilos instead of the government-approved five kilos, saying they might run out of supplies too quickly.
The same report said the NFA, which sells rice at lower than market prices, instructed its warehouses to remain open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. during Saturdays, just to accommodate the buyers.
The Philippine government continues to sell NFA rice at a subsidized price of P18.25 a kilo. The NFA said the “real,” unsubsidized price of rice is P28 to P32. - GMANews.TV
– this is wicked sad. My family need to eat less rice or else they won’t eat at all. I thought Philippines is a land of anything can grow. How come now we don’t have any rice to feed all the people that are residing and yet there are other’s that still want to make more money and import the rice. Never in a million years that I would see the price of rice being so high. I hope there is a solution to this, the NFA rice cannot be eaten, but still selling because that is the only thing they can afford. Hey Mrs. President you should look and think how you can solve this crisis.

Author: Cecille
PASADENA - A 7-year-old boy critically injured by a car that jumped a curb as he walked on a Pasadena corner with his family died Monday, tearful hospital officials announced, just hours after establishing a fund to help his family.
Jose Gabriel Dela Rosa, 7, and his family had just arrived in town from the Philippines and were in town visiting relatives Thursday when they were hit by the car in Old Pasadena.
The case drew an outpouring of sympathy and offers of donations for the family, prompting Huntington Hospital officials to work with a bank in setting up an account on their behalf. Hospital officials said the fund will remain in place. “We had so many people from the community calling and asking how they can help,” said Andrea Stradling of Huntington Hospital in Pasadena. “Never before have we had this much response from people calling and wanting to send flowers or to help.”
Jose Gabriel was struck at about 6:30p.m. Thursday. A Toyota Corolla caromed onto the sidewalk after colliding with a Nissan Altima at Colorado Boulevard and Fair Oaks Avenue, said Lisa Derderian of the Pasadena Fire Department. His father also was hit by the car and remained hospitalized Monday in fair condition. The boy’s mother suffered minor injuries in the accident, as did two people riding in the Altima, authorities said. Janet Pope Givens of the Pasadena Police Department said the department’s Major Accident Investigation

Group to bring Vecina case to UN
Author: Cecille
MANILA, Philippines - A militant migrant group on Saturday said it will bring to the United Nation (UN) the case of domestic worker May Vecina whose death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court in Kuwait.
Mau de la Cruz of dzBB radio quoted Migrante International secretary-general Maita Santiago as saying that the group will ask the help of the UN Special Rapporteur to save Vecina.
- Si May Vecina bale bunso sya sa lahat ng magkakapatid, pinatay nya ang kanyang mga alaga kasi minamaltrato daw sya ng mga amo nya. Gusto nilang masave sa death sentence, pero come to think of it why kill little kids if the bosses are the one that’s not treating you right. I’m a filipino and I know what the family of May is feeling but they should also consider the parents of the kids that she took the lives, they won’t grow old anymore. Tell me what you think.

HK to announce raise in pay of domestic workers
Author: Cecille
MANILA, Philippines - Hong Kong will announce on or before June a “moderate” wage increase for Filipino and other foreign domestic workers there, Malacañang announced Sunday.
A Palace statement said Labor Secretary Marianito Roque reported to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo that authorities there are just waiting for statistical data on consumer price index, gross domestic product and other economic indicators.
He said the data, expected to be released at end-April, will help them determine the amount of increase in the foreign workers’ wages.
– Tell your kamag-anak sa hongkong na may increase and wage but they don’t know yet until the end of this month of how much percentage it will increase by.
